Haverty Furniture Companies, Inc. originated as a family business in 1885 in Atlanta, Georgia. The Company provides its customers a selection of products and styles and virtually all of the furniture merchandise it carries bears the Havertys brand. It also offers the nationally well-known bedding product lines of Sealy, Serta and Tempur-Pedic. Its merchandise presentation is tailored to the needs and tastes of the local markets it serve emphasizing more 'coastal,' 'western' or 'urban' looks as appropriate. All of its retail locations are operated using the Havertys name and it does not franchise its stores. Its customers are generally college educated women in middle to upper-middle income households. As of December 31, 2012, it operated 122 stores serving 81 cities in 17 states with approximately 4.4 million retail square feet. The store's curb appeal is important to the type of middle to upper-middle income consumer that it target and its use of classical facades and attractive landscaping complements the quality and style of its merchandise. Its website has proven to be useful in reaching the growing number of consumers that use the internet to pre-shop before going to a store. The site also provides its sales associates a tool to further engage the customer while she is in the store and extend her shopping experience when she returns home. It have developed strong relationships with its suppliers and believe that it receive excellent pricing and service from its key vendors due to the volume and reliability of its purchase commitments. It competes with numerous individual retail furniture stores as well as chains and certain department stores. The products it sells are subject to federal regulatory standards including, but not limited to, those outlined in the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act.
