GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Jack In The Box Inc is a Delaware Corporation founded in 1951. The Company operates and franchises more than 2,866 Jack in the Box quick-service restaurants (QSR) and Qdoba Mexican Grill fast-casual restaurants. The first Jack in the Box restaurant, which offered only drive-thru service, opened in 1951. As of the end of its fiscal year on September 29, 2013, the Jack in the Box system included 2,251 restaurants in 21 states, of which 465 were company-operated and 1,786 were franchise-operated. Jack in the Box restaurants offer a selection of distinctive products targeted mainly at the adult fast-food consumer. The Company's MENU features a variety of hamburgers, salads, specialty sandwiches, tacos, drinks, smoothies, real ice cream shakes and side items. Qdoba restaurants use fresh, quality ingredients and traditional Mexican flavors to create flavor profiles. Throughout each day, guacamole is prepared on site using fresh Hass avocados, black and pinto beans are slow-simmered, shredded beef and pork are slow-roasted and adobo-marinated chicken and steak are flame-grilled. Qdoba restaurants also offer a variety of catering options that can be tailored to feed groups of five to several hundred. Many of its restaurants operate from 10:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and have a seating capacity that ranges from 60 to 80 persons, including outdoor patio seating at many locations. Each Jack in the Box and Qdoba restaurant competes directly and indirectly with a large number of national and regional restaurant chains, as well as with locally-owned and/or independent restaurants in the quick-service and the fast-casual segments. In selling franchises, it competes with many other restaurant franchisors, some of whom have substantially greater financial resources. Each restaurant is subject to regulation by federal agencies, as well as licensing and regulation by state and local health, sanitation, safety, fire, zoning, building and other departments. It is also subject to federal and state laws regulating the offer and sale of franchises.
