Kindred Healthcare Inc is a healthcare services company. The Company through its subsidiaries operates hospitals, nursing centers and a contract rehabilitation services business across the United States.

Kindred Healthcare Inc was incorporated on March 27, 1998 as a Delaware corporation. The Company is a healthcare services company that through its subsidiaries operates transitional care (TC) hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation hospitals (IRFs), nursing centers, assisted living facilities, a contract rehabilitation services business and a home health and hospice business across the United States. It is organized into four operating divisions: the hospital division, the nursing center division, the rehabilitation division and the care management division. The hospital division operates TC hospitals and IRFs. The nursing center division operates nursing centers and assisted living facilities. The rehabilitation division provides rehabilitation services in hospitals and long-term care settings. The care management division provides home health, hospice and private duty services to patients in a variety of settings, including homes, nursing centers and other residential settings. Its rehabilitation division provided rehabilitation services in hospitals and long-term care settings. The Company's competitors include relatively large providers of home health and hospice services, both for profit and non-profit and smaller independent local operators. The Company provides services in a regulated industry and is subject to various legal actions and regulatory and other governmental and internal audits and investigations from time to time.
