Loral Space & Communications, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, is a satellite communications company engaged in satellite manufacturing with ownership interests in satellite-based communications services. The Company has two segments: Satellite Manufacturing and Satellite Services. The operations of the Satellite Manufacturing segment are managed by Loral's subsidiary Space Systems/Loral, Inc. Space Systems designs and manufactures satellites, space systems and space system components for commercial and government customers whose applications include fixed satellite services , direct-to-home broadcasting, mobile satellite services, broadband data distribution, wireless telephony, digital radio, digital mobile broadcasting, military communications, weather monitoring and air traffic management. The Company participates in satellite services operations mainly through its 62.8% economic interest in Telesat Holdings Inc., which owns Telesat Canada, a global FSS provider. Telesat owns and leases a satellite fleet that operates in geosynchronous earth orbit approximately 22,000 miles above the equator. In this orbit, satellites remain in a fixed position relative to points on the earth's surface and provide reliable, high-bandwidth services anywhere in their coverage areas, serving as the backbone for many forms of telecommunications. Telesat provides video distribution and direct-to-home ('DTH') video, as well as end-to-end communications services using both satellite and hybrid satellite-ground networks. Telesat earns the its revenues by providing satellite-based services to customers, who use these services for their own communications requirements or to provide services to customers further down the distribution chain for video and data services. Telesat also earns revenue by providing ground-based transmit and receive services, selling equipment, installing, managing and maintaining satellite networks, and providing consulting services in the field of satellite communications. Telesat categorizes its revenues into: Broadcast, Enterprise Services and Consulting & Other. Telesat's broadcast services business provided approximately 52% of its revenue for the year ended December 31, 2012. These services included: DTH; Video Distribution and Contribution; and Occasional Use Services. Telesat's enterprise services provided approximately 45% of its revenue for the year ended December 31, 2012. These services include: Telecommunication carrier services; Government Services; Two-way Internet Services; Resource; Maritime and Aeronautical; and Retail. Telesat's consulting & other category provided approximately 3% of its revenues for the year ended December 31, 2012. Telesat competes against other global, regional and national satellite operators and with providers of terrestrial-based communications services.
