M D C Holdings Inc is engaged in Homebuilding and Financial services. Its home building operations consist of construction and sale of single-family detached homes and financial services include mortgage loans and title agency services.

M.D.C. Holdings Inc was incorporated on May 17, 1985. The Company operates in two primary operations, homebuilding and financial services. Its homebuilding segments have operations in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, (which includes Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey), Nevada, Utah, Virginia and Washington. The primary functions of its homebuilding segments include land acquisition and development, home construction, purchasing, marketing, merchandising, sales and customer service. The Company builds and sells single-family detached homes, which are designed and built to meet local customer preferences. The Company is a general contractor for all of its projects and retain subcontractors for site development and home construction. The Company's financial service operations consist of HomeAmerican Mortgage Corporation, which originates mortgage loans, for its homebuyers, American Home Insurance Agency, Inc., which offers third-party insurance products to its homebuyers, and American Home Title and Escrow Company, which provides title agency services to the Company and its homebuyers in Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Nevada and Virginia. The financial services operations also include Allegiant Insurance Company, Inc., A Risk Retention Group, which provides insurance coverage to its home building subsidiaries and certain subcontractors for homes sold by its home building subsidiaries and for work performed in completing subdivisions, and Star American Insurance Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of MDC which is a re-insurer of Allegiant claims. The Company is a general contractor for all of its projects and retains subcontractors for land development and home construction. The financial services of the Company include subsidiary businesses which mainly provide mortgage financing, title insurance and homeowner insurance for its homebuyers. In its homebuilding segments, its functions include land acquisition and development, home construction, purchasing, sales and marketing, and customer service. Generally, it builds single-family detached homes in a number of standardized series, designed to provide variety in the size and style of homes for its potential home buyers. Within each series, it builds several different floor plans offering standard and optional features. HomeAmerican is a full-service mortgage lender and the principal originator of mortgage loans for its homebuyers. HomeAmerican competes with other mortgage bankers to arrange financing for its homebuyers. The Company's business is subject to numerous federal, local and state laws and regulations concerning land development, construction of homes, sales, mortgage lending, environmental and other aspects of its business.
