GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Nanophase Technologies Corp produces engineered nano & larger, sub-micron, materials such as personal care sunscreens, architectural coatings, industrial coating applications, abrasion-resistant additives, plastics additives, medical diagnostics, energy.

Nanophase Technologies Corp was incorporated in Illinois on November 25, 1989. The Company is an advanced materials and applications developer and commercial manufacturer with an integrated family of nanomaterial technologies. It produces engineered nanomaterials for use in diverse markets: personal care including sunscreens, architectural coatings, industrial coating ingredients, abrasion-resistant additives, plastics additives, medical diagnostics, a variety of surface finishing technologies applications, and others. The Company has expanded its offerings to include larger but still sub-micron materials. The Company has created an integrated platform of commercial nanomaterial technologies that are patented, patent-pending or proprietary. These technologies are designed to deliver a nanomaterial solution for a targeted market or a specific customer application. Its platform provides flexibility and capability to engineer nanomaterials that meet a customer's performance requirements and delivers its nanomaterial solutions in a readily usable format. Nanomaterials are generally comprised of particles that are less than 100 nanometers in diameter and these nanoparticles have distinct properties owing to its very small size. A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter, or about 100,000 times smaller in size than the width of a human hair. Nanomaterials have applications in diverse markets where they are incorporated into a process, such as semiconductor polishing, or a product, such as an industrial coating to prevent degradation from ultra-violet radiation or improve wear resistance. It has manufacturing capacity based in two locations in the Chicago area. Within each of its targeted markets and product applications, Nanophase faces potential competition from advanced materials and chemical companies and suppliers of traditional materials. The manufacture and use of certain of the products that contain the Company's nanocrystalline materials are subject to governmental regulations.
