GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Guru Investment Theses on Newmont Mining Corp

Mario Gabelli Comments on Newmont Mining Corp - Jul 27, 2016

Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE:NEM) (3.5%) (NEM – $39.12 – NYSE) based in Denver, Colorado, is one of the largest gold mining companies in the world. Founded in 1921 and publicly traded since 1925, NEM is the only gold company included in the S&P 500 Index and Fortune 500. We expect the company to produce approximately 5.1 million ounces of gold and 320 million pounds of copper in 2016, with over 70% of this production coming from Australia and Nevada. Newmont undertook company wide cost cutting measures during the period 2013 – 2015, lowering its average unit costs base by over 20% during this period. The company has sold non-core assets and has deployed the proceeds from these sales into repaying debt and building new projects which it expects will generate superior rates of return for shareholders. Given Newmont’s largely fixed cost base, every increase (or decrease) in the gold price will flow directly to the company’s bottom line.

Remain Bullish on Gold Amid Economic Slowdown Physical gold and gold mining stocks attractive investments through 2016
The beginning of 2016 has been good for gold with the precious metal trending higher and gold mining stocks have also surged. I have written on Newmont Mining (NYSE:NEM) and Barrick Gold (NYSE:ABX) as two gold mining stocks to remain bullish through 2016. I maintain my view on these two names besides recommending exposure to SPDR Gold Trust (GLD). Read more...
Newmont Mining: A Good Buy After Fed Decision With no rate hike, gold is likely to trend higher in the near term
With the Fed deciding on Thursday to leave interest rates unchanged, there are several industries and stocks that can gain in the near term. A rate hike is unlikely in 2015 as the global economy remains relatively fragile. Among sectors and stocks that I am bullish on after the FOMC outcome, gold is likely to witness gains in the coming months, and this will translate into gold mining stocks moving higher. Newmont Mining (NYSE:NEM) in particular is one of the stocks that look attractive in the near term as well as in the long term. Read more...
Barrick Gold Is a Value Investment Non-core asset sale coupled with low AISC cost makes Barrick Gold attractive
As gold witnessed renewed decline in the last few months, gold mining stocks have also suffered. Barrick Gold (NYSE:ABX) has also steeply declined from May levels of $13.5 per share to current levels of $6.4. While sentiments remain bearish for the precious metal, I am of the opinion that investors can consider some exposure to Barrick Gold at current levels. Bearish sentiments also result in correction being overdone, and that’s the case with Barrick Gold. Read more...
