National Healthcare Corp is engaged in the operation of skilled nursing facilities with associated assisted living and independent living centers. It provides sub-acute and post-acute skilled nursing care, senior living and home health care services.

National Healthcare Corp began business in 1971. It was incorporated in Delaware on September 26, 1997. It is a provider of post-acute care and senior health care services. The Company's main business is the operation of skilled nursing facilities with associated assisted living and independent living centers. The Company's business activities include providing sub-acute and post-acute skilled nursing care, intermediate nursing care, rehabilitative care, senior living services, and home health care services. It operates in 10 states, and its owned and leased properties are located in the Southeastern, Northeastern, and Midwestern parts of the United States. It operates or manages 74 skilled nursing facilities with 9,403 licensed beds, 20 assisted living facilities, five independent living facilities, and 36 homecare programs located in ten states. It also owns the real estate of thirteen healthcare properties and leases these properties to third party operators. In its centers, experienced medical professionals provide medical services prescribed by physicians. Registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and certified nursing assistants provide nursing care 24 hours a day. In addition, its centers provide licensed therapy services, quality nutrition services, social services, activities, and housekeeping and laundry services. It provides therapy services through Professional Health Services, a division of NHC. The Company's licensed therapists provide physical, speech, respiratory and occupational therapy for patients recovering from strokes, heart attacks, orthopedic conditions, neurological illnesses, or other illnesses, injuries or disabilities. All of its long-term care centers participate in the Medicare program, and it has expanded its range of offerings by the creation of center-specific medical specialty units such as its Alzheimer's disease care units and subacute nursing units. The Company's assisted living centers are dedicated to providing personal care services and assistance with general activities of daily living such as dressing, bathing, meal preparation and medication management. It performs resident assessments to determine what services are desired or required and its qualified staff encourages residents to participate in a range of activities. It owns or leases 14 and manages one assisted living centers. Of these 15 centers, nine are located within the physical structure of a skilled nursing center or retirement center and six are freestanding. The Company's four owned or leased and one managed independent living center offer specially designed residential units for the active and ambulatory elderly and provide various ancillary services for its residents, including restaurants, activity rooms and social areas. The Company's home health care programs assist those who wish to stay at home or in assisted living residences but still require some degree of medical care or assistance with daily activities.
