National Healthcare Corp began business in 1971. It was incorporated in Delaware. The Company's main business is the operation of skilled nursing facilities with associated assisted living and independent living centers. The Company's business activities include providing sub and post-acute skilled and intermediate nursing and rehabilitative care, senior living services, home health care services, management services, hospice services, accounting and financial services and insurance services. It operates in 10 states, and its owned and leased properties are located mainly in the southeastern United States. The Company's business is post-acute care and senior health care services. Within health care services it provides services which includes, Skilled Nursing Facilities, Rehabilitative Services, Medical Specialty Units, Managed Care Contracts, Assisted Living Centers, Independent Living Centers, Homecare Programs and Pharmacy Operations. It also generate revenues from management, accounting and financial services to third party owners of healthcare facilities, from insurance services to our managed centers, and from rental income. It operates specialized care units within certain of its healthcare centers such as Alzheimer's disease care units, sub-acute nursing units and several in-house pharmacies. In its centers, experienced medical professionals provide medical services prescribed by physicians. Registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and certified nursing assistants provide nursing care 24 hours a day. In addition, its centers provide licensed therapy services, quality nutrition services, social services, activities, and housekeeping and laundry services. It provides therapy services through Professional Health Services, a division of NHC. The Company's licensed therapists provide physical, speech, respiratory and occupational therapy for patients recovering from strokes, heart attacks, orthopedic conditions, neurological illnesses, or other illnesses, injuries or disabilities. All of its long-term care centers participate in the Medicare program, and it has expanded its range of offerings by the creation of center-specific medical specialty units such as its Alzheimer's disease care units and subacute nursing units. The Company's assisted living centers are dedicated to providing personal care services and assistance with general activities of daily living such as dressing, bathing, meal preparation and medication management. It performs resident assessments to determine what services are desired or required and its qualified staff encourages residents to participate in a range of activities. It owns or leases 14 and manages one assisted living centers. Of these 15 centers, nine are located within the physical structure of a skilled nursing center or retirement center and six are freestanding.
