National Retail Properties Inc, a Maryland corporation is a fully integrated real estate investment trust or REIT was formed in 1984. The Company's assets are real estate assets, mortgages and notes receivable, and commercial mortgage residual interests. The Company acquires, owns, invests and develops properties that are leased primarily to retail tenants under long-term net leases and are primarily held for investment. As of December 31, 2013, it owned 1,860 Properties with an aggregate gross leasable area of 20,402,000 square feet, located in 47 states. The Company's operations are reported within one business segment in the financial statements and all properties are considered part of the Properties or Property Portfolio. The Company generally competes with numerous other REITs, commercial developers, real estate limited partnerships and other investors, including but not limited to insurance companies, pension funds and financial institutions that own, manage, finance or develop retail and net leased properties.
