CAI International Inc is a transportation finance and logistics company. It purchases equipment and then leases it to container shipping lines, freight forwarders and other transportation companies.

CAI International Inc was originally incorporated under the name Container Applications International, Inc. in the State of Nevada on August 3, 1989. It is an equipment leasing and management company. The Company operates its business through two segments: equipment leasing and equipment management. Its equipment leasing segment revenue comprises rental revenue and finance lease income from its owned fleet, and its equipment management segment revenue comprises gain on sale of equipment portfolios and management fee revenue for managing equipment for third-party investors. The Company purchase new and used equipment, which it lease mainly to container shipping lines, freight forwarders and other transportation companies and either retain as part of its owned fleet or sell to third-party investors for whom it then provide management services. The Company leases its equipment to lessees under long-term leases, short-term leases and finance leases. It owns a fleet of 1,804 railcars, which it leases within North America. It manages equipment for third-party investors under management agreements that cover portfolios of equipment. It also operates a fleet of railcars that are used to transport industrial goods, materials and other products on railroad tracks throughout North America. The Company competes mainly with other container leasing companies, including both larger and smaller lessors. It also competes with bank leasing companies offering long-term operating leases and finance leases, and container shipping lines, which sometimes lease their excess container inventory. The Company is subject to regulations promulgated in various countries, including the United States, seeking to protect the integrity of international commerce and prevent the use of equipment for international terrorism or other illicit activities.
