General Communication, a holding Company, was incorporated in 1979 under the laws of the State of Alaska. The Company through its subsidiaries is a diversified communications provider with operations in the state of Alaska. It offers facilities-based local and long-distance voice services, wireless telephone services, video services, data and Internet access to residential and business customers across the state under its GCI brand. The Company's facilities include redundant and geographically diverse digital undersea fiber optic cable systems linking its Alaska terrestrial networks to the networks of other carriers in the lower 48 contiguous states. As of December 31, 2013, the Company had 141,500 wireless subscribers, 129,300 cable modem subscribers and 136,700 basic video subscribers. The Company operates its business in two reportable segments: Wireless and Wireline. The Wireless segment offers wholesale wireless services to wireless carriers which in turn provide full wireless services to their customers. The Company owns statewide wireless facilities that cover the Alaska population providing service to urban and rural communities. It owns a statewide wireless network that uses GSM/HSPA+, CDMA/EVDO and Long Term Evolution, or LTE. In addition, it also owns Wi-Fi access points that create a Wi-Fi network branded as TurboZone in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Kenai-Soldotna, Matanuska-Susitna Valley, and other areas of the State. The Company's Wireless segment competes with AT&T, Verizon, and other smaller companies. The Wireline segment offers its products and services to three categories: Consumer, Business Services, and Managed Broadband. In Consumer, the Company offers retail wireless, data, video and voice services to residential customers. The products and services offered to consumer customers include wireless voice and data plans, high-speed cable modem service, video services, and long-distance and local voice services. In Business Services, the Company offers retail wireless, data, video and voice services to local, national and international businesses, governmental entities, public and private educational institutions, wholesale data and voice services to common carrier customers. The products and services offered to business customers include data network services, wireless voice and data plans, high-speed Internet service, data center services, cloud computing, video services, and voice services. Additionally, the Company offers managed services under which it designs, sells, installs, services, and operates networks. In Managed Broadband, the Company offers Internet, data network and managed services to rural schools and health organizations and regulated voice services to residential and commercial customers in rural communities primarily in Southwest Alaska.
