GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Business Description

Portland General Electric Company or PGE was incorporated in 1930. The Company was a wholly-owned subsidiary of Enron Corp. for the period from July 1, 1997 through April 3, 2006. In 1997, Portland General Corporation, the former parent of PGE, merged with Enron, with Enron continuing in existence as the surviving corporation and PGE operating as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Enron. On April 3, 2006, the Company ceased to be a subsidiary of Enron. PGE is a single, vertically integrated electric utility engaged in the generation, purchase, transmission, distribution and retail sale of electricity in the state of Oregon. It operates as a cost-based, regulated electric utility. The Company also participates in the wholesale market by purchasing and selling electricity and natural gas to utilities and energy marketers in order to balance its supply of power to meet the needs of retail customers and manage its net variable power costs. The Company's service area includes 52 incorporated cities, of which Portland and Salem are the largest, within a state-approved service area allocation of approximately 4,000 square miles. As of December 31, 2009, PGE served 815,739 retail customers with a service area population of approximately 1.7 million, comprising 43% of the state's population. Competitors within the Company's service territory include the local natural gas company, which competes in the residential and commercial space heating, water heating, and appliance markets, and fuel oil suppliers, which compete mainly for residential space heating customers. PGE's operations are subject to a range of environmental protection laws, including those related to air and water quality, noise, waste disposal, endangered species, and climate change.
