Rowan Companies PLC was incorporated under the laws of England and Wales on May 4, 2012. It is a provider of international and domestic contract drilling services. The Company also owns and operates a manufacturing division that produces equipment for the drilling, mining and timber industries. It is a successor to a contract drilling business conducted since 1923. Rowan provides contract drilling services utilizing a fleet of 31 self-elevating mobile offshore drilling platforms and 29 marketed deep-well land drilling rigs. The Company focuses is on specification and premium jack-up rigs, which customers use for offshore exploratory and development drilling and, in certain areas, well work over operations. The Company conducts offshore drilling operations in various markets throughout the world, and onshore drilling operations in the United States. As of February 21, 2013, industry utilization in the Middle East for jack-up rigs was 85%, and the company had eight rigs under contract in Saudi Arabia, two rigs under contract in Qatar and one stacked rig in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. It operates large jack-up rigs capable of drilling depths up to 35,000 feet in maximum water depths ranging from 250 to 550 feet, depending on rig size and location. The Company's jack-ups are designed with a floating hull that is fully equipped to serve as a drilling platform supported by three independently elevating legs. In addition to the Company's offshore drilling operations, it provides drilling equipment and personnel on a contract basis for exploration and development of onshore areas. The Company competes with several offshore drilling contractors that together have 782 mobile rigs available worldwide, including 481 jack-ups. In the United States, the Company's all operations and facilities are subject to regulation by a variety of local, state, and federal agencies with authority over safety and environmental compliance.
