RenaissanceRe Holdings, Ltd was established in Bermuda in 1993, to write mainly property catastrophe reinsurance. Currently the company is a provider of reinsurance and insurance coverage's and related services. The Company's core products include property catastrophe reinsurance, which it writes through its main operating subsidiary, Renaissance Reinsurance and joint ventures, mainly DaVinci and Top Layer Re; specialty reinsurance risks written through Renaissance Reinsurance and DaVinci; and main insurance and quota share reinsurance, which its write through the operating subsidiaries of RenRe Insurance. It conducts its business through two reportable segments, Reinsurance and Individual Risk. The Company's Reinsurance operations are comprised of three units: property catastrophe reinsurance, mainly written through Renaissance Reinsurance and DaVinci; specialty reinsurance, mainly written through Renaissance Reinsurance and DaVinci; and certain other activities of ventures. Reinsurance operations are managed by the Global Chief Underwriting Officer. The Company mainly writes catastrophe reinsurance on an excess of loss basis, which means it provides coverage to its insureds when aggregate claims and claim expenses from a single occurrence of a covered peril exceed the attachment point specified in a particular contract. It also writes retrocessional reinsurance contracts that provide property catastrophe coverage to other reinsurers or retrocedants. The Company also invests in catastrophe-linked securities, which are generally privately placed fixed income securities as to which all or a portion of the repayment of the main is linked to catastrophic events. It writes a number of lines of reinsurance other than property catastrophe, such as catastrophe exposed workers' compensation, surety, terrorism, political risk, trade credit, medical malpractice, catastrophe exposed personal lines property, casualty clash, certain other casualty lines and other specialty lines of reinsurance, which is referred as specialty reinsurance. The Company offers its specialty reinsurance products mainly on an excess of loss basis and also provide some proportional coverage. It also provides customized weather and energy risk management solutions to various customers on a worldwide basis. The Company actively manages property catastrophe-oriented joint ventures, which provide it with an additional presence in the market, enhance client relationships and generate fee income. These joint ventures allow the Company to leverage its access to business and its underwriting capabilities on a larger capital base. The Company defines its Individual Risk segment to include underwriting that involves understanding the characteristics of the original underlying insurance policy.
