RenaissanceRe Holdings Ltd offers reinsurance and insurance coverages and related services to its clients. The Company's core business is Property catastrophe reinsurance.

RenaissanceRe Holdings Ltd was formed under the laws of Bermuda on June 7, 1993. The Company is a provider of reinsurance and insurance coverages and related services. Its core products include property catastrophe and specialty reinsurance risks. Its reinsurance and insurance products are principally distributed through intermediaries. The Company's reportable segments are Catastrophe Reinsurance, Specialty Reinsurance, and Lloyd's. Catastrophe Reinsurance includes catastrophe reinsurance and certain property catastrophe joint ventures managed by its ventures unit. The coverage protects against large natural catastrophes, such as earthquakes, hurricanes and tsunamis, as well as claims arising from other natural and man-made catastrophes such as winter storms, freezes, floods, fires, wind storms, tornadoes, explosions and acts of terrorism. It offers coverage to insurance companies and other reinsurers on an excess of loss basis. Specialty Reinsurance includes specialty reinsurance and certain specialty joint ventures managed by its ventures unit. Its portfolio includes various classes of casualty business, such as automobile liability, casualty clash, catastrophe exposed workers' compensation, cyber liability, directors and officers liability, environmental liability, general liability, medical malpractice and professional indemnity, and other specialty lines of reinsurance such as accident and health, agriculture, aviation, financial guaranty, marine and energy, mortgage guaranty, multi-line regional, political risk, terrorism and trade credit, which the Company collectively refers to as specialty reinsurance. Lloyd's includes reinsurance and insurance business written through Syndicate 1458. In addition, its other category includes strategic investments, investments unit, corporate expenses, capital servicing costs, non-controlling interests, certain expenses related to the acquisition of Platinum, results of its discontinued operations, and the remnants of its Bermuda-based insurance operations. The Company's competitors in the property catastrophe and specialty reinsurance market include other companies active in the Bermuda market, currently including Allied World Assurance Company, AG, Arch Capital Group Ltd., Aspen Insurance Holdings Ltd, Axis Capital Holdings Ltd, Chubb Ltd, Endurance Specialty Holdings Ltd., Everest Re Group, Ltd., Hamilton Re Ltd., PartnerRe Ltd., Third Point Reinsurance Ltd., Validus Holdings, Ltd., White Mountains Insurance Group, Ltd. and XL Group plc, as well as a growing number of private, unrated reinsurers offering predominately collateralized reinsurance. It also competes with certain Lloyd's syndicates active in the London market, as well as with a number of other industry participants, such as American International Group, Inc., Berkshire Hathaway Inc., Hannover Rückversicherung AG, Ironshore Inc., Münchener Rückversicherungs-Gesellschaft Aktiengesellschaft in München and Swiss Re Ltd.
