GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Sterling Construction Co Inc is a heavy civil construction company engaged in the building and reconstruction of transportation and water infrastructure projects in Texas, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California, Hawaii and other states.

Sterling Construction Co Inc was founded in 1991 as a Delaware corporation. The Company is a heavy civil construction company engaged in the building and reconstruction of transportation and water infrastructure projects in Texas, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California, Hawaii and other states. Its transportation infrastructure projects include highways, roads, bridges and light rail and its water infrastructure projects include water, waste water and storm drainage systems. The Company performs the majority of the work required by its contracts with its own crew and equipment. The Company provides its services by using traditional general contracting arrangements, including fixed-unit price contracts, lump sum contracts and cost-plus contracts. Fixed unit price contracts are used in competitively-bid public civil construction contracts. Under a lump sum contract, the contractor typically agrees to deliver a completed project in accordance with the contract's requirements for a specific price, and the customer agrees to pay the price according to a negotiated payment schedule. In a cost plus contract, the owner of a project generally agrees to pay the cost of all of the contractor's labor, subcontracts and materials plus an amount for contractor overhead and profit. The Company also participates in joint ventures with other large construction companies and other partners, typically for large, technically complex projects, including design-build projects. Its operations are subject to compliance with numerous regulatory requirements of federal, state and local agencies and authorities.
