GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

TransDigm Group Inc is a designer, producer and supplier of engineered aircraft components for use on commercial and military aircraft in service.

Transdigm manufactures products for electronic, fluid, power, and mechanical motion control onboard aircraft. It also supplies products used for cabin structures, lighting, laminates, pallets, and host of other applications. For fiscal 2016, we expect the company to generate roughly 70% of sales from commercial customers--airlines and parts distributors in the aftermarket (39% of total 2016 sales) and aircraft producers like Boeing and Airbus (32% of total 2016 sales) for original equipment sales--and about 30% from defense customers.

Guru Investment Theses on TransDigm Group Inc

Baron Funds Comments on TransDigm Group Inc. - Aug 17, 2016

TransDigm Group, Inc. (NYSE:TDG), the aircraft parts manufacturer (and the largest position in the Fund), reported that its crucial commercial aftermarket division grew revenues 13% on an organic basis in the quarter and its EBIDTA grew 28%. This was a significant improvement from the prior quarter and validated the company’s stance that the previous quarter’s results were an anomaly and that the company should be able to revert to its historic high single-digits organic revenue growth. TransDigm also announced that they repurchased $100 million of stock when the price was low and completed a significant $1 billion acquisition in the quarter. This is in keeping with other purchases of like businesses whose profitability has subsequently been considerably improved under TransDigm management.

TransDigm recently held an analyst day that highlighted the incredible success the company has had and the cash flow machine they have built. By the way, equity value of the company has compounded at 33% for the 24 years since founding and the enterprise value of the company has grown from $50 million to $23 billion!

Weitz Funds Comments on TransDigm Group - Jul 20, 2016

TransDigm Group (NYSE:TDG) is a designer, producer and supplier of engineered aircraft components for use on commercial and military aircraft. TransDigm’s shares moved higher during the second calendar quarter on better than expected results in the company’s commercial aftermarket business, the acquisition of Data Device Corporation and the raising of additional debt capital, which may signal the possibility of future mergers & acquisitions or a special dividend. Moreover, TransDigm’s investor meeting in late-June provided additional information regarding the strength and durability of the company’s business model and strategy for the foreseeable future.

Wallace Weitz Comments on TransDigm - Apr 14, 2016

TransDigm (NYSE:TDG) ($220 per share) makes (primarily replacement) parts for the aerospace industry. The company is typically one of two or three suppliers (sometimes the sole supplier) of important but relatively low-cost parts for commercial and military aircraft. As such, they enjoy fairly predictable sales volume and strong pricing power. Growth comes through acquisition and from a rising number of aircraft in service. The company is an active, but very disciplined, acquirer. They buy parts producers, squeeze costs out of the manufacturing process and gradually raise prices. Management is very disciplined in adhering to its investment criteria, and when acquisition candidates are not available, they return cash to shareholders through share buybacks and large special dividends. Although the stock price is close to our appraised business value, we think the likelihood of further consistent growth, regardless of economic conditions, will reward us for continuing to own the stock over the years.

Baron Funds Comments on TransDigm Group Inc. - Jan 14, 2016

One of our top ten holdings is aircraft parts manufacturer TransDigmGroup, Inc. While TransDigm (NYSE:TDG) earns a modest return on original equipment parts, it earns far larger margins on after-market replacement parts for airframes that remain in service for decades. This creates recurring cash flow that it uses for acquisitions and shareholder dividends. When we first bought TransDigm in 2006, it had $411 million in revenues. Today, annual revenues are up to $2.7 billion.

Wallace Weitz Comments on TransDigm Group - Nov 06, 2015

TransDigm Group (NYSE:TDG) is a designer, producer and supplier of engineered aircraft components for use on commercial and military aircraft. With the PneuDraulics acquisition having closed in August, TransDigm has officially completed its busiest, and perhaps most attractive, year of acquisitions since fiscal 2011. Heavy on commercial aftermarket assets, the 2015 class should provide a nice multi-year runway for growth and operational improvement. CEO Nick Howley and his team have capitalized on low interest rates and an accommodating credit environment over the past several years, growing the company’s underlying business value at an attractive rate. While we continue to see good things ahead for TransDigm over the next several years, we lightened the Fund’s position during the calendar third quarter as its discount to estimated value narrowed.

From Wallace Weitz (Trades, Portfolio)'s Partners Value Fund commentary for third quarter 2015.
