GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Guru Investment Theses on Tesco Corp

Jeff Auxier Comments on Tesco - Feb 13, 2014

Fund performance has been negatively impacted by turnarounds like global supermarket operator Tesco PLC (TESO). Retailers in general, even world-class operators, are suffering from a glut of stores fostered by a rapid transformation to online and mobile shopping. While we don’t see much more downside, the execution has been disappointing—slower than expected. Over the long term this approach to buying high-quality assets during distressed times has been a winner. It is often difficult to gauge the timeline.

Tesco Corp was created on December 1, 1993. The Company is engaged in designing, manufacturing, and service delivery of technology based solutions for the upstream energy industry. Its products and service offerings consists of equipment sales and services to drilling contractors and oil and natural gas operating companies globally. The Company has four business segments: Top Drives, Tubular Services, Casing Drilling, and Research and Engineering. The Top Drive segment sells equipment and provides services to drilling contractors and oil and natural gas operating companies throughout the world. The Company provides top drive rental services on a day-rate basis for land and offshore drilling rigs, as well as provides after-market sales and service to its customers. It manufactures top drives that are used in drilling operations to rotate the drill string while suspended from the derrick above the rig floor. Its top drives offer portability and flexibility, permitting drilling companies to conduct top drive drilling for all or any portion of a well. It offers nine distinct model series of top drive systems, using hydraulic, permanent magnet alternating current ("AC"), and induction AC technology. The Tubular Services segment includes a suite of automated offerings, as well as conventional casing and tubing running services. It also offers installation service of deep water completion equipment using its Multiple Control Line Running System ("MCLRS") proprietary and patented technology. Its conventional service offerings provide equipment and personnel for the installation of tubing and casing, including power tongs, pick-up/lay-down units, torque monitoring services, and connection testing services for new well construction and in work-over and re-entry operations. Research and Engineering segment invest in research and development activities related to its proprietary technologies in tubular services and top drive model development. Its customer base comprises of international and national oil and natural gas service and exploration and production companies. The Casing Drilling process used oilfield casing in place of drill pipe to simultaneously drill and case the well, reducing both drilling time and the chance of unscheduled drilling events. Casing Drilling technology minimized the use of conventional drill pipe and drill collars and enabled the operators to eliminate pipe trips and case the interval while drilling.
