GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Western Gas Partners, LP was formed by Anadarko Petroleum Corporation in 2007 to own, operate, acquire and develop midstream energy assets. The Company is engaged in the business of gathering, processing, compressing, treating and transporting natural gas, condensate, NGLs and crude oil for Anadarko Petroleum Corporation and its consolidated subsidiaries, as well as third-party producers and customers. The Company's operations and activities are managed by its general partner, which is indirectly controlled by Anadarko through WGP. Anadarko is among the largest independent oil and gas exploration and production companies in the world. Anadarko's upstream oil and gas business explores for and produces natural gas, crude oil, condensate and NGLs. The services provided by the company and other midstream natural gas companies are classified into the categories: Gathering: At the initial stages of the midstream value chain, a network of typically smaller diameter pipelines known as gathering systems directly connect to wellheads in the production area, Compression: Natural gas compression is a mechanical process in which a volume of natural gas at a given pressure is compressed to a desired higher pressure, which allows the natural gas to be gathered more efficiently and delivered into a higher pressure system, processing plant or pipeline, Treating and dehydration:To the extent that gathered natural gas contains contaminants, such as water vapor, carbon dioxide and/or hydrogen sulfide, such natural gas is dehydrated to remove the saturated water and treated to separate the carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide from the gas stream, Processing: Processing removes the heavier and more valuable hydrocarbon components, which are extracted as NGLs. The residue remaining after extraction of NGLs meets the quality standards for long-haul pipeline transportation or commercial use. The Company's operations are subject to stringent federal, regional, state and local laws and regulations relating to the protection of the environment.
