GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Kemper Corp was incorporated in Delaware in 1990 The Company, through its subsidiaries, serves the basic financial needs of individuals, families and small businesses by providing property and casualty insurance, life and health insurance, and automobile finance services. The Company conducts its continuing operations through four operating segments: Kemper Preferred (Preferred), Kemper Specialty (Specialty), Kemper Direct (Direct) and Life and Health Insurance. Fireside Bank, reported in discontinued operations, is in the final stages of voluntary liquidation. The Company's operations are conducted solely in the United States. The Company's property and casualty insurance business operations are conducted primarily through the Preferred, Specialty, and Direct segments. In addition, the Life and Health Insurance segment's career agents also sell property insurance to its customers. Collectively, these segments provide automobile, homeowners, renters, fire, and other types of property and casualty insurance to individuals and commercial automobile insurance to businesses. Property insurance indemnifies an insured with an interest in physical property for loss of, or damage to, such property or the loss of its income-producing abilities. Casualty insurance primarily covers liability for damage to property of, or injury to, a person or entity other than the insured. The Company's Preferred segments primarily sells preferred and standard risk automobile and homeowners insurance. Specialty, based in Dallas, Texas, conducts business in 21 states, principally in the southwest and western United States. Specialty provides personal and commercial automobile insurance to value-minded consumers who have had difficulty obtaining standard or preferred risk insurance, usually because of their driving records, claims experience or premium payment history. The Company's Direct segments, based in Chicago, Illinois, markets personal automobile, homeowners and renters insurance through a variety of direct-to-consumer websites, including its own websites, marketing partners, employer and other affinity-sponsored relationships.
