James Barrow is executive director of Dallas-based investment firm Barrow, Hanley, Mewhinney & Strauss, the lead portfolio manager for the Vanguard Windsor II and Selected Value Funds. In both the second and third quarters the guru bought shares in the following stocks:

Altra Industrial Motion Corp. (AIMC)

During the second quarter, the firm increased its holding by 63.90% and increased it by 1.02% in the third quarter. The guru holds 0.32% of outstanding shares of the company, which is a designer, producer and marketer of electromechanical power transmission products. Its products include clutches and brakes, overrunning clutches, engineered bearing assemblies, gearing and gear motors and belted drives.

Third-quarter net sales decreased 5% from the same quarter of 2015, income from operations as a percentage of net sales was 6%, and non-GAAP income from operations as a percentage of net sales was 9%.

Jim Simons (Trades, Portfolio) is the largest shareholder among the gurus with 0.82% of outstanding shares followed by Paul Tudor Jones (Trades, Portfolio) with 0.06%.

Ascena Retail Group Inc. (ASNA)

During the second quarter, the guru increased its holding by 0.40% and by 36.42% in the third quarter. The guru owns 0.17% of outstanding shares of the company, which through its subsidiaries operates as a specialty retailer of apparel for women and "tween" girls and boys. The company offers apparel, accessories, footwear and lifestyle products such as bedroom furnishings and electronics.

Third-quarter GAAP earnings of 7 cents per diluted share compared to a loss of $1.98 per diluted share in the same period of fiscal 2015, and net sales were $1.812 billion compared to $1.170 billion last year.

Bridgepoint Education Inc. (BPI)

During the second quarter, the firm increased its holding by 8.58% and by 20.77% in the third quarter. The guru holds 0.76% of outstanding shares of the company, which is a provider of postsecondary education services. It is also engaged in developing new technologies to improve the way students learn through technology.

The company reported revenue of $136.6 million compared with revenue of $140.8 million for the third quarter of 2015, and operating loss was $8.8 million compared with operating loss of $34.5 million in the same quarter of 2015.

Simons is the largest shareholder among the gurus with 2.33% of outstanding shares followed by Donald Smith (Trades, Portfolio) with 0.91%, Jeremy Grantham (Trades, Portfolio) with 0.04% and Charles Brandes (Trades, Portfolio) with 0.02%.

BanColombia SA ADRÂ (CIB)

During the second quarter, the guru increased its holding by 22.19% and by 10.76% in the third quarter. The guru holds 0.01% of outstanding shares of the company, which is a financial institution providing financial products and services to a diversified individual, corporate and government customer base throughout Colombia, Latin America and the Caribbean region.

The largest shareholder among the gurus is Simons with 0.12% of outstanding shares.

Lifetime Brands Inc. (LCUT)

During the second quarter, the firm increased its holding by 122.18% and by 18.21% in the third quarter. Nanometrics Inc. (NANO)

During the second quarter, the guru increased its holding by 60.98% and by 51.64% in the third quarter. The guru holds 0.31% of outstanding shares of the company, which along with its subsidiaries provides process control metrology and inspection systems used in the fabrication of integrated circuits, high-brightness LEDs, discrete components and data storage devices. During the third quarter revenue grew 5% quarter on quarter and 29% year over year.

The largest shareholder among the gurus is Royce with 8.14% of outstanding shares followed by Simons with 2%.

Tejon Ranch Co. (TRC)

During the second quarter the firm increased its holding by 117.96% and by 30.50% in the third quarter. The guru holds 0.14% of outstanding shares of the company, which is a diversified real estate development and agribusiness company committed to responsibly using its land and resources to meet the housing, employment and lifestyle needs of Californians and create value for its shareholders. The company reported a 9% increase for revenue; net income was $300,000 compared to net loss of $800,000 for the same period in 2015.

Third Avenue Management (Trades, Portfolio) is the largest shareholder among the gurus with 10.82% of outstanding shares followed by Royce with 7.5%, Martin Whitman (Trades, Portfolio) with 5.86%, Michael Price (Trades, Portfolio) with 2.5% and Gabelli with 2.12%.

West Marine Inc. (WMAR)

During the second quarter, the guru increased its holding by 81.64% and by 56.08% in the third quarter. The guru holds 0.32% of outstanding shares of the specialty retailer, which offers a selection of core boating and water recreation products, primarily serving the needs of boat owners and professionals who provide services to them. The company reported a decrease of 1.3% year over year, but comparable-store sales increased 0.2% year over year.

The largest shareholder among the gurus is Royce with 7.11% of outstanding shares followed by John Rogers (Trades, Portfolio) with 1.56% and Simons with 0.48%.

Tennant Co. (TNC)

During the second quarter, the guru raised its holding by 129.41% and by 2.78% in the third quarter. The guru holds 0.35% of outstanding shares of the company, which is engaged in the design, manufacture and sale of products used in the maintenance of nonresidential surfaces. Its products include floor maintenance and outdoor cleaning equipment specialty surface coatings and aftermarket parts and consumables. During the last quarter consolidated net sales of $200.1 million decreased 2.3% from the same quarter of 2015 and adjusted net earnings totaled $12.1 million, or 68 cents per diluted share.

Royce is the largest shareholder among the gurus with 7.32% of outstanding shares followed by Gabelli with 2.2%, Mairs and Power (Trades, Portfolio) with 0.66% and Simons with 0.39%.
