FAQ
What are Gurus?
Gurus are institutional investment managers with at least $100 million in assets under management. These are some of the most knowledgeable and experienced investors in the entire market.
What is a 13F filing?
A Form 13F is a quarterly report filed with the SEC by institutional investment managers with at least $100 million in U.S. equity assets under management. It discloses their U.S.-listed stock holdings at the end of each quarter and is typically filed within 45 days. 13Fs provide key insights into how professional investors allocate capital.
Why is tracking Guru trades beneficial?
By studying Guru activity, you can:
- Generate high-quality investment ideas by identifying stocks multiple Gurus are accumulating.
- Validate your own research by seeing whether respected investors share your thesis.
- Spot conviction signals such as position sizing, new buys vs. adds, or meaningful trims.
- Identify emerging trends across sectors or themes based on aggregated Guru activity.
- Analyze historical performance to understand which Gurus and strategies have demonstrated long-term success.
How often do Guru portfolios get updated?
Most Guru trades get updated quarterly as these investors submit their 13F filings to the SEC. However, if an investor owns 5% or more of a publicly traded company, they are required to report any trades of that stock within 5 business days. These can be found on the Real-Time Picks page.
How many Gurus does GuruFocus track?

Can I get notified of Guru activity?
Yes! There are several ways you can get notified of Guru activity:
- Guru Lists - Compile a list of Gurus you are interested in and get notified anytime one of them files a new trade.
- Stock alerts - Get notified anytime any Guru buys or sells a stock you are watching.
- Screener alerts - Set up a screener that finds stocks based on Guru activity and get notified anytime a new company enters or exits your screener results.
- Portfolio alerts - Get notified anytime there is Guru buying or selling activity across your entire portfolio or watchlist.
Are there model portfolios based on Guru strategies?
Yes! There are several Guru-based model portfolios to explore under our Tools section.
Can I screen for stocks based on Guru trades?
Absolutely. You can either build a Guru-focused screener from scratch or layer Guru-based filters onto one of our premade screens. Just click on the Gurus tab on the screener or use the search bar to find a specific filter.
Are there Guru-related tutorials?
Definitely. We have guided walkthroughs in our Demo Center as well as instructional videos on our YouTube channel.
Should I just copy Guru trades?
No. Guru trades should be used as an idea-generation and research tool, not as automatic buy or sell signals. The most effective approach is to combine Guru insights with other fundamental analysis and valuation tools before making investment decisions.
