BlackRock Advisors is one of the subsidiaries operating under the BlackRock Inc. group of investment management companies. BlackRock Advisors was created in 1994 and operates as a privately owned investment manager with offices in Wilmington, Delaware, its headquarters, and Boston and New York. Since PNC Financial’s acquisition of BlackRock in 1995, BlackRock Advisors has gained access to the variety of resources offered by the company, such as PNC’s “large distribution network and opportunities for diversification through alliances and mergers with PNC affiliates specializing in equity and other investments,” and continued as a sub-subsidiary. While BlackRock Advisors is a subsidiary within the networks of a much larger organization, the company itself is a substantial investment firm that has subsidiaries of its own, including BlackRock Group. As of 2015, the company has over half a trillion in total assets under management, employing over 270 employees to manage its 343 accounts. Its total amount of assets under management has doubled since 2010, moving from approximately $240 billion to its current $524 billion. The majority of its clients are investment companies, making up almost all of its clients and totaling over three quarters of its total assets under management. The rest of its clients are comprised of pooled investment vehicles and government and quasi-government agencies. BlackRock Advisors’ revenue is generated from a percentage of its managed assets. The company provides a variety of services to its clients, launching and managing equity, fixed income, and balanced mutual funds as well as hedge funds. The company’s most notable mutual funds and ETFs are its group of iShares funds. Laurence D. Fink acts as the CEO of BlackRock Advisors, acting as the chairman and CEO for the parent company BlackRock Inc. and leading the Global Executive Committee as well. Similarly, Gary Shedlin, who is the CFO for BlackRock Inc., also acts on the leadership team of BlackRock advisors under the same title.
