HL Financial Services LLC, also known as Hilliard Lyons or J.J.B. Hilliard, W.L. Lyons, LLC, is a full services investment firm based out of Louisville, Kentucky. The company can trace its history back to 1854 when Quigley and Lyons, the oldest predecessor to the company, was established. The partnership would be dissolved and Henry J Lyons would decide to continue the firm as Henry J. Lyons & Co., which would become W.L. Lyons & Company when Henry J. Lyons’s son took over the company. John James Byron Hilliard, along with two other businessmen, would come together to found the A.D. Hunt & Company in 1872. This company would operate as a private bank, dealing with real estate mortgages, railroad bonds, the gold trade and investment loans. The company would change its name to J.J.B. Hilliard and, subsequently, to J.J.B. Hilliard & Son. The two companies J.J.B. Hilliard & Son and W.L. Lyons and Company would merge into a single entity in 1965 to form J.J.B. Hilliard, W.L. Lyons. The company would then switch its business structure to a corporation model in 1972 and become acquired by PNC Financial Services in 1998. The ownership of the company would be changed again, this time to a joint ownership between the employees of the company and Houchens Industries, Inc., in 2008, which the company remains an affiliate with today. Hilliard Lyons invests most heavily in the finance sector, which alone makes up over a quarter of its total asset allocations, and also invests in the consumer discretionary, information technology, consumer staples, health care, industrials, and energy sectors, among others to a lesser degree, in order of decreasing allocation. Hilliard Lyons holds over $6.2 billion in total assets under management spread across over 20,000 accounts. The company operates out of over 70 branches located across the United States and offers an “extensive menu of investments including professionally managed accounts, as well as stocks, bonds, options, mutual funds, annuities and insurance.”
