S&P 500 and Dow Jones Post New Record Highs Friday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 28,645.26 on Friday with a gain of 23.87 points or 0.08%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,240.02 for a gain of 0.11 points or 0.01%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 9,006.62 for a loss of 15.77 points or 0.17%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 13.36 for a gain of 0.71 points or 5.61%.

For the week, the Nasdaq was up approximately 0.93% while the Dow Jones and S&P 500 had gains of 0.6%. For the year, the Nasdaq has gained 31.99%, while the S&P 500 is up 27.08% and the Dow Jones is up 21.73%.

Friday's Market Movers

The S&P 500 and Dow Jones posted small gains on Friday for another day of consecutive closing highs. The Nasdaq ended lower after breaking through the 9,000 level for the first time on Thursday. Disney (DIS, Financial) gained 0.034% Friday after reporting revenue of $32 million on its Christmas Day Star Wars release. Treasury prices were mostly higher Friday across the yield curve with the three-year note's price increasing 23/32 to a yield of 1.598%.

  • The Fed released a report showing several controversial repercussions of Trump's trade tariff plans.
  • The EIA's Weekly Petroleum Status Report showed crude oil inventories down by 5.474 million barrels to a total of 1076.3 million barrels.
  • The Baker Hughes North American oil rig count decreased from 962 to 904.

The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,684.49 for a loss of 55.60 points or 0.52%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 9,942.92 for a loss of 34.48 points or 0.35%.
