US Indexes Rebound Tuesday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,018.16 on Tuesday with a gain of 1,167.14 points or 4.89%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,882.23 for a gain of 135.67 points or 4.94%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 8,344.25 for a gain of 393.58 points or 4.95%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 47.30 for a loss of 7.16 points or -13.15%.

Tuesday’s market movers

U.S. indexes rebounded Tuesday after reporting the worst trading day since the 2008 crisis on Monday.

President Donald Trump presented the idea of a 0% payroll tax rate for the remainder of 2020 to help combat market challenges.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The NFIB Business Optimism Index increased to 104.5 in February from 104.3.
  • The Treasury held an auction for three-year notes at a rate of 0.563%.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,350.90 for a gain of 37.46 points or 2.85%. The S&P 600 closed at 806.03 for a gain of 22.50 points or 2.87%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 8,854.47 for a gain of 266.34 points or 3.10%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 7,511.58 for a gain of 249.64 points or 3.44%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,696.67 for a gain of 63.03 points or 3.86%; the S&P 100 at 1,300.49 for a gain of 62.98 points or 5.09%; the Nasdaq 100 at 8,372.27 for a gain of 424.24 points or 5.34%; the Russell 3000 at 1,674.57 for a gain of 75.72 points or 4.74%; the Russell 1000 at 1,588.36 for a gain of 73.59 points or 4.86%; the Wilshire 5000 at 29,274.91 for a gain of 1,335.10 points or 4.78%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 622.02 for a gain of 22.80 points or 3.80%.
