US Indexes Close Mostly Flat Thursday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,080.10 on Thursday with a loss of 39.51 points or -0.15%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,115.34for a gain of 1.85 points or 0.06%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 9,943.05 for a gain of 32.52 points or 0.33%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 32.94 for a loss of 0.53 points or -1.58%.

Thursday’s market movers

U.S. indexes ended mostly flat Thursday. Coronavirus concerns capped gains. California’s governor required face coverings in public as infection cases rise. Florida, Arizona, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas have all made headlines for substantial increases in Covid-19 cases.

Jobless claims added to the day’s worries as 1.508 million Americans filed for jobless claims, holding steady with the previous week’s 1.566 million. Continuing jobless claims were basically unchanged at 20.544 million.

On the economic calendar, the following reports affected market trading:

  • Around 1.508 million Americans filed for jobless claims, just slightly below the previous week’s 1.566 million. Continuing jobless claims were 20.544 million, down from 20.606 million.
  • The Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index improved to 27.5 in June from -43.1.
  • The Conference Board’s Leading Economic Indicators Index increased 2.8% in May after a decrease of 6.1%.
  • The Treasury held auctions for four-week bills at a rate of 0.125%, eight-week bills at a rate of 0.135% and five-year TIPS at a rate of -0.766%.

In the S&P 500, energy led gains and real estate led losses. In the S&P 100, the following stocks led gains and losses:

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,427.08 for a gain of 0.54 points or 0.04%. The S&P 600 closed at 829.29 for a loss of 2.91 points or -0.35%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 9,895.99 for a gain of 1.30 points or 0.01%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 7,062.64 for a loss of 2.77 points or -0.04%.
