US Stocks Close Mostly Higher Tuesday

S&P 500 reports a new record

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 27,778.07 on Tuesday with a loss of 66.84 points or -0.24%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,389.78 for a gain of 7.79 points or 0.23%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 11,210.84 for a gain of 81.12 points or 0.73%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 21.55 for a gain of 0.20 points or 0.94%.

Tuesday's market movers

U.S. stocks closed mostly higher on Tuesday. The S&P 500 closed with a new record.

Investors were watching retail earnings and also potential government stimulus. House lawmakers have returned early from a recess to discuss aid for the U.S. Postal Service.

From the retailers:

  • Home Depot (HD, Financial) reported revenue of $38.05 billion, increasing 23.4% year over year and beating estimates by $3.41 billion. Second-quarter GAAP earnings of $4.02 per share beat estimates by 34 cents.
  • Walmart (WMT, Financial) reported revenue of $137.7 billion, increasing 5.6% year over year and beating estimates by $3.93 billion. Second-quarter GAAP earnings of $2.27 per share beat estimates by 99 cents and non-GAAP earnings of $1.56 beat estimates by 31 cents.
  • Kohl's (KSS, Financial): Revenue of $3.41 billion decreased 23.0% year over year and beat estimates by $340 million. Second-quarter GAAP earnings of 30 cents beat estimates by $1.30 and a non-GAAP loss of 25 cents beat estimates by 63 cents.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • E-commerce retail sales increased 32% from the first quarter.
  • Building permits increased 18.8% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.495 million.
  • Housing starts increased 22.6% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.496 million.
  • The Treasury held auctions for 119-day bills at a rate of 0.110% and 42-day bills at a rate of 0.090%.

The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,938.48 for a loss of 64.15 points or -0.58%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 7,301.33 for a loss of 133.90 points or -1.80%.
