I have heard that Janet Lowe is a great author, but never got to any of her books. When, Lowe came out a month ago with “The Triumph of Value Investing: Smart Money Tactics for the Postrecession Era,” the topic appealed to me.

Many people including value investors might be unfamiliar with Janet Lowe, a brief bio is provided below:

Janet Lowe is a leading authority on value investing and the author of 22 books on value investing and audiotapes. Her work has been published in a number of publications, including Newsweek, The Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times, The Dallas Morning News, and San Jose Mercury News. She lives in San Diego and Santa Fe.

The book is overall a good read and definitely is more geared to beginning investors. Janet draws upon the investing advice of four famous investors; Warrent Buffett, William O’Neil, Charles Brandes, and David Iben; and teaches how to practically apply it. Janet Lowe personally interviewed all four famous investors, including Warren Buffett. Lowe repeatedly quotes from Benjamin Graham throughout the book, confirming her strong value orientation. Lowe stresses on the lessons taught by Graham and shows how relevant his teachings are today.

The lesson of the book is that even though these are tough times for investors and there will always be downturns in the market, if you stick to your teachings and the basics, then more often than not you will be able to regain your losses. An important lesson to remember is what got you up the mountain to begin with, and making sure that you set yourself up on the path of success again. After all, it is only a matter of time before our markets recover, and you need to put yourself in the best position to recoup the losses that you have suffered, or even make large gains over the next few years.

One of the things that the book stress is that the most difficult time to invest is right after the market turns sour. This is the most elementary idea to value investors, but not well known (or practiced) among the general public. Too many people are worried about losing what they have left, and not many have the stomach to jump right back into the market especially after a huge run like the one we have recently experienced. The important thing isn’t about just being in the market, is keeping a cool head and using your judgment. Lowe importantly points out not to listen to analyst forecasts. Again, this is an elementary topic for many investors, but practiced by nearly everyone else, especially “sophisticated investors” on Wall Street.

Lowe gets into important topics about value investing including; margin of safety, valuation, basic ratios like the quick ratio, among other topics. The book explains practically how a beginning investor can start managing their own money. This includes screening for stocks with value characteristics, avoiding fraud, making a checklist, and finding a broker. Lowe shows beginners how to analyze dozens of U.S. and foreign stocks.

Janet Lowe does a wonderful job of walking beginners with the most important aspects of value investing. She does her best to take the advice from the best and relate it to beginning investors. A more experienced investor would find the book largely elementary, but the book is ideal for a beginning investor.
