Chuck Royce's Royce Family of Funds portfolio manager Jay Kaplan (responsible for managing Royce Dividend Value Fund) was on CNBC to discuss rush from companies paying special dividends, what is his investment criteria for selecting dividend paying companies for Royce Dividend Value Fund portfolio.
-- Don't pick companies based on who is about to offer a special dividend.
-- Look for strong balance sheet, has good cash flow, strong management, management ownership for making investments.
-- Increase in dividend taxes next year will not impact investors putting their money in dividend stocks or mutual funds like Royce's Dividend Value Fund.
-- Okay with dividend as most of the companies Royce Funds owns are well capitalized and have strong cash on balance sheet, so it is a good move for shareholders
