Michael Burry (Trades, Portfolio), who is most recognized for anticipating the housing market crash in 2008, said he is betting on Oracle (ORCL, Financials). The investor revealed in a recent Substack article that he has acquired put options and shorted the software company directly during the previous six months.
Burry said he doesn't trust Oracle's current path because he doesn't like its investment plan or the fact that its debt is going up. "I don't know why it is doing this, but it didn't have to." He wrote, "Maybe ego," but he didn't say what his positions were.
Oracle's stock has been all over the place in the last few months. Last September, the stock shot up 36% in one day because of a positive cloud projection linked to demand for artificial intelligence. However, it eventually lost those gains as investors thought about the company's $95 billion in debt and high data center costs.
Burry is betting against Oracle, Nvidia, and Palantir because he thinks they are too exposed to AI hype. He said he doesn't short big companies like Meta, Alphabet, and Microsoft because their main industries are still strong even though AI poses threats.
