U.S. market indexes reported another day of new highs Tuesday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19,911.21 for a gain of 114.78 points or 0.58%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,271.72 for a gain of 14.76 points or 0.65%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,463.83 for a gain of 51.29 points or 0.95%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 12.78 for a gain of 0.14 points or 1.11%.

Tuesday’s market movers

No major economic reports were announced Tuesday. The Federal Open Market Committee began its two-day policy meeting which will end on Wednesday afternoon with a press conference. The Fed is expected to increase its federal funds rate which will have widespread market affects.

In the broad market, the technology, energy and utilities sectors led stocks higher. The S&P 500 technology sector gained 1.26% for the day.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,373.53 for a gain of 0.39 points or 0.03%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 848.93 for a gain of 0.28 points or 0.03%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,084.37 for a gain of 3.07 points or 0.04%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,773.08 for a gain of 6.59 points or 0.07%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,686.05 for a gain of 3.54 points or 0.21%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,004.39 for a gain of 7.82 points or 0.78%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,351.16 for a gain of 7.58 points or 0.56%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,260.06 for a gain of 7.64 points or 0.61%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 643.79 for a gain of 3.42 points or 0.53%.
