For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19,911.21 for a gain of 114.78 points or 0.58%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,271.72 for a gain of 14.76 points or 0.65%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,463.83 for a gain of 51.29 points or 0.95%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 12.78 for a gain of 0.14 points or 1.11%.
Tuesday’s market movers
No major economic reports were announced Tuesday. The Federal Open Market Committee began its two-day policy meeting which will end on Wednesday afternoon with a press conference. The Fed is expected to increase its federal funds rate which will have widespread market affects.
