U.S. market indexes were lower on Thursday with trading volume down and minimal market activity before the holiday weekend.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19,819.78 for a loss of -13.90 points or 0.07%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,249.26 for a loss of 0.66 points or 0.03%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,432.09 for a loss of 6.47 points or 0.12%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 13.37 for a gain of 0.42 points or 3.24%.

Thursday’s market movers

Economic reports affecting market trading on Thursday included the following:

  • International trade in goods was reported at -$65.3 billion which was down from the previous report of -$61.9 billion.
  • Jobless claims were down 10,000 to a total of 265,000.
  • Wholesale trade inventories reported a monthly increase of 0.9%.
  • The EIA Petroleum Status report showed oil inventories increasing by 600,000 barrels for the day.
  • Mortgage rates increased according to Freddie Mac (FMCC, Financial). The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage reported its ninth consecutive weekly increase at an average rate of 4.32%.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

Sectors leading losses in the broad market included financial, energy and consumer discretionary. Technology stocks in the S&P 500 were higher for the day with a gain of 0.02%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,363.18 for a gain of 2.35 points or 0.17%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 841.52 for a gain of 1.91 points or 0.23%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 7,985.82 for a gain of 2.80 points or 0.04%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,694.75 for a gain of 28.85 points or 0.30%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,667.18 for a gain of 4.67 points or 0.28%; the S&P 100 at 996.29 for a loss of 0.82 points or 0.08%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,337.69 for a loss of 0.02 points or 0.01%; the Russell 1000 at 1,247.23 for a loss of 0.20 points or 0.02%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 637.00 for a gain of 2.59 points or 0.41%.
