US Market Indexes Lower on Monday

Energy and materials led losses

U.S. market indexes were lower on Monday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19971.13 for a loss of -122.65 points or -0.61%. The S&P 500 closed at 2280.90 for a loss of -13.79 points or -0.60%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5613.71 for a loss of -47.07 points or -0.83%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 11.88 for a gain of 1.30 points or 12.29%.

Monday’s market movers

Earnings and Donald Trump’s executive order on immigration affected stocks on Monday. Economic reports affecting market trading for the day included the following:

  • Personal income and outlays increased 0.3% for the month of December. The PCE Price Index reported an annual increase of 1.6%.
  • Pending home sales were 1.6% higher for the month of December.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

Caterpillar (CAT, Financial) -2.22%

DuPont (DD, Financial) -2.19%

Chevron (CVX, Financial) -1.73%

Intel (INTC, Financial) -1.47%

In the broad market, energy and materials led losses. Technology stocks were also lower with the S&P 500 Index down 0.81%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1352.33 for a loss of -18.37 points or -1.34%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 827.14 for a loss of -11.22 points or -1.34%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8029.26 for a loss of -95.78 points or -1.18%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9647.45 for a loss of -128.23 points or -1.31%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1682.55 for a loss of -14.12 points or -0.83%; the S&P 100 Index at 1006.94 for a loss of -5.99 points or -0.59%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1355.20 for a loss of -9.29 points or -0.68%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1265.82 for a loss of -7.96 points or -0.62%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 638.55 for a loss of -3.93 points or -0.61%.
