US Market Indexes Gain With Positive Corporate Earnings

U.S. market indexes were higher on Thursday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20578.71 for a gain of 174.22 points or 0.85%. The S&P 500 closed at 2355.84 for a gain of 17.67 points or 0.76%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5916.78 for a gain of 53.74 points or 0.92%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 13.96 for a loss of -0.97 points or -6.50%.

Thursday’s market movers

Corporate earnings and economic reports were positive on Thursday, helping stocks to gain. Economic reports released for the day included the following:

  • Jobless claims decreased by 17,000 and reached a 17-year low.
  • The Conference Board’s Leading Economic Indicators Index increased by 0.4% for the month.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

American Express (AXP, Financial) 5.92%

Caterpillar (CAT, Financial) 2.07%

Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) 1.84%

Visa (V, Financial) 1.63%

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8283.88 for a gain of 85.02 points or 1.04%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9656.64 for a gain of 114.57 points or 1.20%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1721.31 for a gain of 16.56 points or 0.97%; the S&P 100 Index at 1040.57 for a gain of 7.23 points or 0.70%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1398.54 for a gain of 11.11 points or 0.80%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1307.21 for a gain of 9.91 points or 0.76%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 653.70 for a gain of 2.50 points or 0.38%.
