U.S. market indexes were mostly higher on Thursday.

The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,075.34 for a gain of 2.79 points or 0.05%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,389.52 for a gain of 1.39 points or 0.06%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,951.47 for a loss of 6.43 points or 0.03%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 10.47 for a loss of 0.21 points or 1.97%.

Thursday’s market movers

A decrease in oil prices kept stocks mostly flat with gains from technology stocks. The House of Representatives passed the Republicans’ health care bill on Thursday. Economic reports affecting trading on Thursday included the following:

  • International trade reported a deficit of $43.7 billion.
  • Jobless claims decreased by 19,000 to 238,000.
  • Factory orders increased 0.2% for the month.
