Nasdaq Closes at 6121, Stocks Mostly Lower

U.S. market indexes were mostly lower on Friday with the Nasdaq gaining to report its fourth consecutive weekly increase. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20896.61 for a loss of -22.81 points or -0.11%. The S&P 500 closed at 2390.90 for a loss of -3.54 points or -0.15%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6121.23 for a gain of 5.27 points or 0.09%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 10.42 with a loss of -0.18 points or -1.70%.

For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down -0.55%, the S&P 500 reported a loss of -0.36% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.34%.

Friday’s market movers

U.S. indexes reported their first week of losses after three weeks of gains. Economic reports released on Friday included the following:

  • The Consumer Price Index reported an increase of 0.2% for the month and 2.2% for the year.
  • Retail sales increased 0.4% for the month.
  • Business inventories increased 0.2% for the month.
  • The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index increased to 97.7.

Merck (MRK, Financial) -1.33%

UnitedHealth (UNH, Financial) -0.87%

Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) -0.86%

American Express (AXP, Financial) -0.55%

In the broad market, industrial stocks led losses. Technology was higher with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.25%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1382.77 for a loss of -7.42 points or -0.53%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 838.54 for a loss of -6.48 points or -0.77%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8361.23 for a loss of -36.27 points or -0.43%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9435.82 for a loss of -66.00 points or -0.69%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1719.33 for a loss of -8.21 points or -0.48%; the S&P 100 Index at 1056.81 for a loss of -0.43 points or -0.04%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1415.75 for a loss of -2.74 or -0.19%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1324.73 for a loss of -2.19 points or -0.17%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 649.82 for a loss of -1.15 points or -0.18%.
