U.S. market indexes were higher on Monday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,981.94 for a gain of 85.33 points or 0.41%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,402.32 for a gain of 11.42 points or 0.48%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,149.67 for a gain of 28.44 points or 0.46%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 10.42 with a gain of 0.02 points or 0.19%.

Monday’s market movers

Oil prices helped stocks to gain on Monday with an agreement between Saudi Arabia and Russia pushing oil prices higher. The leading economic report for the day was the Housing Market Index report which showed an increase to 70 from 68.

In the broad market, materials and energy stocks led gains. Technology stocks in the S&P 500 were also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector up 0.56%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,393.92 for a gain of 11.15 points or 0.81%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 844.40 for a gain of 5.86 points or 0.70%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,428.97 for a gain of 67.74 points or 0.81%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,502.22 for a gain of 66.40 points or 0.70%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,731.13 for a gain of 11.80 points or 0.69%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,060.92 for a gain of 4.11 points or 0.39%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,423.12 for a gain of 7.37 points or 0.52%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,331.32 for a gain of 6.58 points or 0.50%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 652.98 for a gain of 3.16 points or 0.49%.
