U.S. market indexes were mixed on Tuesday with the Nasdaq reporting another new high.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,979.75 for a loss of 2.19 points or -0.01%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,400.67 for a loss of 1.65 points or 0.07%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,169.87 for a gain of 20.20 points or 0.33%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 10.65 with a gain of 0.23 points or 2.21%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Technology gains led indexes higher on Tuesday. Economic reports released for the day included the following:

  • Housing starts increased to 1.172 million SAAR.
  • Industrial production increased by 1% for the month.
  • E-commerce retail sales reported a 4.1% SAAR of growth for the first quarter.
