US Market Indexes Lower on Tuesday

U.S. market indexes were lower on Tuesday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21,029.47 for a loss of 50.81 points or 0.24%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,412.91 for a loss of 2.91 points or 0.12%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,203.19 for a loss of 7.00 points or 0.11%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 10.38 for a gain of 0.57 points or 5.81%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Lower oil prices and bank stocks kept market valuations down for the day. Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Personal income showed an increase of 0.4% for the month. The PCE Price Index increased 1.7% for the year.
  • The S&P Corelogic Case-Shiller Home Price Index increased 0.9% on a seasonally adjusted basis for the month. For the year the Index reported a 5.9% increase.
  • The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index decreased to 117.9 from 119.4.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

In the broad market, energy stocks led losses. Technology stocks in the S&P 500 were higher with a gain of 0.43%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,371.19 for a loss of 11.05 points or 0.80%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 832.49 for a loss of 5.01 points or 0.60%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,299.98 for a loss of 69.70 points or 0.83%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,364.47 for a loss of 59.92 points or 0.64%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,721.09 for a loss of 6.18 points or 0.36%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,064.26 for a loss of 1.09 points or 0.10%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,426.51 for a loss of 2.87 points or 0.20%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,336.52 for a loss of 2.05 points or 0.15%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 656.55 for a loss of 0.97 points or 0.15%.
