US Market Indexes Continue Losses, End Month Higher

Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan lead losses for the day

U.S. market indexes were lower again on Wednesday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21008.65 for a loss of -20.82 points or -0.10%. The S&P 500 closed at 2411.80 for a loss of -1.11 points or -0.05%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6198.52 for a loss of -4.67 points or -0.08%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 10.41 for a gain of 0.03 points or 0.29%.

For the month, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.33%, the S&P 500 gained 1.15% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 2.50%.

Wednesday’s market movers

Stocks were lower Wednesday with bank valuations down. Economic reports also affected trading on Wednesday. The following economic reports were released:

  • The Mortgage Bankers Association’s mortgage applications index was down -3.4%.
  • The Pending Home Sales Index decreased -1.3% for the month.
  • The Federal Reserve reported its outlook on the economy as modest-to-moderate in the Beige Book, showing little change in their perspective on the economy.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) -3.28%

JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) -2.09%

Microsoft (MSFT, Financial) -0.81%

In the broad market, financial stocks led losses. Technology stocks were also lower with the S&P 500 technology sector down -0.16%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1370.21 for a loss of -0.99 points or -0.07%. The S&P 600 closed at 832.17 for a loss of -0.32 points or -0.04%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8296.60 for a loss of -3.38 points or -0.04%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9358.67 for a loss of -5.80 points or -0.06%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1721.69 for a gain of 0.60 points or 0.03%; the S&P 100 Index at 1062.91 for a loss of -1.35 points or -0.13%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1426.10 for a loss of -0.41 points or -0.03%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1336.18 for a loss of -0.34 points or -0.03%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 658.01 for a gain of 1.46 points or 0.22%.
