U.S. market indexes were mixed on Friday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21,384.28 for a gain of 24.38 points or 0.11%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,433.15 for a gain of 0.69 points or 0.03%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,151.76 for a loss of 13.74 points or 0.22%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 10.38 for a loss of 0.52 points or 4.77%.

For the week, the Dow Jones gained 0.52%, the S&P 500 gained 0.05%, and the Nasdaq Composite reported a loss of 0.92%.

The Dow Jones reported a new high and tech stocks continued to report losses. Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Housing starts decreased to a seasonally adjusted average of 1.092 million.
  • The University of Michigan's Consumer Sentiment Index decreased to 94.5.
