US Market Indexes Continue to Gain on Monday

Dow Jones and S&P 500 close at new highs

U.S. market indexes were higher on Monday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22,118.42 for a gain of 25.61 points or 0.12%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,480.91 for a gain of 4.08 points or 0.16%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,383.77 for a gain of 32.21 points or 0.51%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 9.89 for a loss of -0.14 points or -1.40%.

Monday’s market movers

The Dow Jones and S&P 500 reached new highs on Monday, helping stocks to gain. Consumer credit was the leading economic report for the day with an increase of $12.4 billion for the month, following an increase of $18.3 billion and below consensus of $16 billion.

In the broad market, consumer staples led gains. Technology stocks were also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.61%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1414.17 for a gain of 1.85 points or 0.13%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 854.75 for a gain of 0.15 points or 0.02%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8583.22 for a gain of 24.63 points or 0.29%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9619.13 for a loss of -13.54 points or -0.14%

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1752.90 for a gain of 1.42 points or 0.08%; the S&P 100 Index at 1097.21 for a gain of 1.79 points or 0.16%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1466.68 for a gain of 2.20 points or 0.15%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1373.85 for a gain of 2.09 points or 0.15%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 664.92 for a gain of 0.35 points or 0.05%.
