For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21,865.37 for a gain of 56.97 points or 0.26%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,446.30 for a gain of 2.06 points or 0.08%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,301.89 for a gain of 18.87 points or 0.30%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 11.70 for a gain of 0.38 points or 3.36%.
Tuesday’s market movers
Indexes gained Tuesday despite a number of geographic and geopolitical challenges. Energy stocks were lower following flooding in Texas, and North Korea launched missiles over Japan, which created tensions for U.S. foreign relations.
Economic reports affecting market trading on Tuesday included the following:
- The S&P Corelogic Case-Shiller HPI increased 0.1% for the month and 5.7% for the year.
- The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index increased to 122.9 from 120.0.

- Boeing (BA, Financial) 1.40%.

- IBM (IBM, Financial) 0.44%.

In the broad market, industrial and technology stocks led gains. The S&P 500 industrial sector gained 0.73%, and the S&P 500 technology sector gained 0.43%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,383.68 for a gain of 1.45 points or 0.10%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 828.26 for a gain of 0.12 points or 0.01%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,420.97 for a gain of 9.10 points or 0.11%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,370.43 for a loss of 1.46 points or 0.02%.
