US Market Indexes Gain on Monday

U.S. market indexes were higher on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22,057.37 for a gain of 259.58 or 1.19%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,488.11 for a gain of 26.68 points or 1.08%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,432.26 for a gain of 72.07 points or 1.13%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 10.73 for a loss of -1.39 points or -11.47%.

Monday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes regained some ground on Monday with geographic and geopolitical issues less of a concern. There were no leading economic reports on the calendar for Monday.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Cisco (CSCO, Financial) 2.26%

3M (MMM, Financial) 1.88%

Apple (AAPL, Financial) 1.81%

Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) 1.77%

American Express (AXP, Financial) 1.71%

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ, Financial) 1.70%

IBM (IBM, Financial) 1.69%

In the broad market, financial and technology stocks led gains. The S&P 500 financial sector gained 1.74% and the S&P 500 technology sector gained 1.41%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,414.83 for a gain of 15.40 points or 1.10%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 847.73 for a gain of 8.81 points or 1.05%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,656.09 for a gain of 82.29 points or 0.96%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,507.07 for a gain of 127.93 points or 1.36%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,739.02 for a gain of 19.93 points or 1.16%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,098.54 for a gain of 11.56 points or 1.06%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,471.20 for a gain of 15.95 points or 1.10%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,378.37 for a gain of 14.94 points or 1.10%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 665.35 for a gain of 6.40 points or 0.97%.
