Large-cap indexes close at new highs

U.S. market indexes gained on Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22,158.18 for a gain of 39.32 points or 0.18%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,498.37 for a gain of 1.89 points or 0.08%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,460.19 for a gain of 5.91 points or 0.09%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 10.50 for a loss of -0.08 points or -0.76%.

Wednesday’s market movers

The three leading large-cap indexes closed at new highs for the second consecutive day. Decreased risks from geographic and geopolitical factors continued to help stocks gain. Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

The Mortgage Bankers Association’s mortgage applications index increased 9.9%.

The Producer Price Index increased 0.2% for the month and 2.4% for the year.

The EIA Petroleum Status Report reported an increase of 5.9 million barrels in inventory for the week.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Chevron (CVX, Financial) 1.50%

Verizon (VZ, Financial) 0.98%

Disney (DIS, Financial) 0.95%

DuPont (DD, Financial) 0.89%

General Electric (GE, Financial) 0.84%

Microsoft (MSFT, Financial) 0.71%

In the broad market, energy stocks led gains. Technology stocks in the S&P 500 Index were lower with the technology sector down -0.14%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,426.89 for a gain of 3.43 points or 0.24%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 856.82 for a gain of 2.91 points or 0.34%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,712.80 for a gain of 4.66 points or 0.05%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,594.76 for a gain of 19.67 points or 0.21%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,748.48 for a loss of -2.77 points or -0.16%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,104.88 for a gain of 1.85 points or 0.17%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,477.71 for a gain of 1.03 points or 0.07%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,384.01 for a gain of 0.77 points or 0.06%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 664.81 for a loss of -0.12 points or -0.02%.
