US Market Indexes Gain on Friday, Finish Higher for September

U.S. market indexes were higher on Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22,405.09 for a gain of 23.89 points or 0.11%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,519.36 for a gain of 9.30 points or 0.37%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,495.96 for a gain of 42.51 points or 0.66%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 9.49 with a loss of -0.06 or -0.63%.

For the month of September, the Dow Jones gained 2.05%, the S&P 500 gained 1.89% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.02%.

Friday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes ended higher for the month. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite closed at new highs on Friday, led by technology stocks.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Personal income increased 0.2% for the month.
  • The PCE Price Index reported a 1.4% annual increase.
  • The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index decreased to 95.1 from 95.3.
  • The Baker Hughes rig count decreased to 1,153 from 1,155.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,490.86 for a gain of 2.08 points or 0.14%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 903.98 for a gain of 2.03 points or 0.23%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,043.67 for a gain of 23.29 points or 0.26%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,972.84 for a loss of -2.79 points or -0.03%.
