US Market Indexes Start the Week Higher on Monday

Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite all close at new highs

U.S. market indexes were higher on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22,557.60 for a gain of 152.51 points or 0.68%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,529.12 for a gain of 9.76 points or 0.39%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,516.72 for a gain of 20.76 points or 0.32%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 9.50 for a loss of -0.01 points or -0.11%.

Monday’s market movers

An optimistic outlook for President Donald Trump’s tax overhaul plan helped all three major stock indexes to reach new highs on Monday.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Purchasing Managers' Manufacturing Index increased to 53.1 from 52.8.
  • The ISM Manufacturing Index increased to 60.8 from 58.8.
  • Construction spending increased 2.5% for the year and 0.5% for the month.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Intel (INTC, Financial) 2.52%

General Electric (GE, Financial) 1.74%

Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) 1.46%

JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) 1.39%

In the broad market, materials and health care led gains. Technology was also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.15%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,509.47 for a gain of 18.61 points or 1.25%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 916.99 for a gain of 13.01 points or 1.44%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,148.28 for a gain of 104.61 points or 1.16%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,061.70 for a gain of 88.86 points or 0.89%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,811.01 for a gain of 15.07 points or 0.84%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,116.74 for a gain of 4.55 points or 0.41%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,502.63 for a gain of 7.20 points or 0.48%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,402.72 for a gain of 5.82 points or 0.42%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 673.71 for a gain of 2.65 points or 0.39%.
