US Market Indexes Lower on Monday

U.S. market indexes were lower on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22,761.07 for a loss of -12.60 points or -0.06%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,544.73 for a loss of -4.60 points or -0.18%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,579.73 for a loss of -10.45 points or -0.16%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 10.37 for a gain of 0.72 points or 7.46%.

Monday’s market movers

A selloff in health care, industrials and financials caused broad market losses on Monday. Large-cap stock Genearal Electric (GE, Financial) also reported a loss of -3.94% for the day.

No market-moving economic reports were released on Monday. Banks and bond markets were closed for the Columbus Day holiday.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

Nike (NKE, Financial) -1.72%

Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) -1.30%

UnitedHealth (UNH, Financial) -0.89%

In the broad market, health care stocks led losses with the S&P 500 health care sector down -0.63%. Technology led gains for the day with the S&P 500 technology sector up 0.25%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,503.56 for a loss of -6.66 points or -0.44%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 910.72 for a loss of -4.38 points or -0.48%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,120.94 for a loss of -44.36 points or -0.48%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,028.33 for a loss of -21.99 points or -0.22%.
