US market indexes higher for the week

U.S. market indexes were higher on Friday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 23,539.19 for a gain of 22.93 points or 0.10%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,587.84 for a gain of 7.99 points or 0.31%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,764.44 for a gain of 49.49 points or 0.74%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 9.03 for a loss of 0.90 points or 9.06%.

For the week, the Dow Jones gained 0.44%, the S&P 500 gained 0.26%, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.93%.

Friday’s market movers

Apple (AAPL, Financial) gained 2.61% on Friday after a positive fourth-quarter earnings report that helped stocks gain on Friday. All three leading indexes closed at new highs. Apple beat analysts’ revenue and earnings estimates. Revenue of $52.6 billion increased 12.3% from the comparable quarter.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The October employment report showed an increase of 261,000 jobs. The unemployment rate dropped to 4.1%.
  • International trade reported a deficit of $43.5 billion.
  • The PMI Services Index was unchanged at 55.3.
  • Factory orders increased 1.4% for the month.
  • The ISM Non-Manufacturing Index increased to 60.1 from 59.8.

In the broad market, health care and technology led gains. The S&P 500 health care sector gained 0.80%, and the S&P 500 technology sector gained 0.78%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,494.91 for a loss of 1.64 points or 0.11%. The S&P 600 closed at 900.88 for a loss of 5.79 points or 0.64%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,114.72 for a gain of 23.25 points or 0.26%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,982.77 for a loss of -53.80 points or -0.54%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,835.98 for a gain of 4.64 points or 0.25%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,143.41 for a gain of 3.94 points or 0.35%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,532.27 for a gain of 4.36 points or 0.29%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,433.88 for a gain of 4.54 points or 0.32%; and the Dow Jones US Select Dividend Index at 678.50 for a loss of 0.68 points or 0.10%.
