US Market Indexes Lower on Tuesday

US market indexes were lower on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24746.21 for a loss of -7.85 points or -0.03%. The S&P 500 Index closed at 2680.50 for a loss of -2.84 points or -0.11%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6936.25 for a loss of -23.71 points or -0.34%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 10.25 with a gain of 0.35 points or 3.54%.

Tuesday's Market Movers

Stocks were lower Tuesday with Apple leading declines on lower expectations for iPhone X demand. Technology stocks overall reported the greatest losses with the S&P 500 technology sector down -0.67%. Crude prices gained causing increases in energy stocks and helping the sector to report the day’s greatest gains. The S&P 500 energy sector reported an increase of 0.88%.

The S&P Corelogic Case-Shiller HPI was the only leading economic report on the calendar Tuesday. The Index reported a 0.7% seasonally adjusted monthly increase and a 6.4% yearly increase.

Disney (DIS, Financial) -0.52%

Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) -0.48%

Small-Cap Stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1544.40 for a gain of 1.47 points or 0.10%. The S&P 600 Index closed at 940.27 for a gain of 0.93 points or 0.10%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9468.69 for a gain of 12.11 points or 0.13%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10286.47 for a gain of 6.04 points or 0.06%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1905.79 for a gain of 1.21 points or 0.06%; the S&P 100 Index at 1186.61 for a loss of -2.41 points or -0.20%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1587.00 for a loss of -1.25 points or -0.08%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1485.39 for a loss of -1.38 points or -0.09%; and the Dow Jones US Select Dividend Index at 706.19 for a gain of 1.01 points or 0.14%.
